In extrusion blow moulding the mould is first filled with polyethylene terephthalate (PETE). The PETE is then heated to expand it into the correct form, which is the desired shape. The PETE is cooled and centrifuged at high speeds to remove the gas, which includes all solvents. The cooled fluid is injected into the mould, and the cavitation process begins. The cavitation process begins by drawing in the fluid through a Feed Channel and then allowing it to percolate into the inside walls of the polyethylene sheet.

As the cavitation continues the pressure inside the mould forces the plastic to adhere together into a solid mass. In extrusion blow moulding the cavity may be filled with polystyrene beads, polyurethane, polycarbonate, or other thermoplastic materials. A filler rod or extrusion rod may be used to further fill the cavity once it has formed.

In low pressure and high speed extrusion moulding, such as in low strength (LVP) plastic bottles and other plastic containers, the PET is placed over a heated metal extrusion rod. The rod heats up and melts the plastic, forcing it through a fine mesh of cross-sectionally elongated channels. These channels are shaped to allow the plastic to flow smoothly. This process uses both high and low strength properties of plastic, which are important for the plastic bottles and other products such as wide neck jars.

Low temperature PETE extrusion is popular in the food and beverage industry. The extrusion method is often used in the manufacture of thick plastic bottles used for drinks such as milk, juices, or powdered drinks. The low temperature PETE results in thicker and more durable plastic that is more resistant to chemicals than low density polyethylene (LDP), which results in thicker layers of plastic with lower resistance to breakage. Additionally, the thermal drying of the plastics result in smoother consistency with greater resistance to scratches. Such qualities make it ideal for food and beverage industries.
